Now that you're having fun getting to know and understand the different types of Monitors available to you, we'll outline a handful of useful Tips and Tricks that should help streamline your Monitor creation process.
1. Set notification channels up first
We recommend that before you get started creating your monitors you get your notification channels set up and ready to go, if you're midway through creating a monitor and stop to create a new notification channel you'll have to start the process of creating that Monitor again. You can set up your different notification channels by heading to 'My Account' and clicking on 'Notification Channels', for more information on how to do this please see our article on 'How to Setup Notification Channels.'
2. Duplicating to edit
Once a Monitor is active you can not edit the metric, dimension, sensitivity or threshold that's already set. You can edit the notification channel and the title of a widget, but nothing else. We would recommend that if you want to make changes to a live monitor that you click on the three dots in the top right hand corner and click 'duplicate' this makes a copy of the desired widget and you can edit that version before saving it to your monitors.
3. No limit to the number of monitors
Yes, you read that correctly, as a user there is no limit to the amount of monitors you can create.
4. These are user-defined alerts for the near term, critical issues - what do you want to be woken up for / interrupted on your day off for
Because these monitors are user defined they are created to focus on one metric and one dimension at a time. This is why we recommend testing, testing, testing and making sure that your monitors are set with the appropriate sensitivity and thresholds so that you are only being alerted when it matters the most to you and your business.
5. Log file powered monitors should not be used for real-time use cases - only use Collector API/Plugins for that
As you'll be aware we receive your log files as quickly as they can be delivered to us, so if there is a delay in the delivery of your log files it means there will be delay in how quickly we get and process your data, this means the data delay would impact the monitors. This is why we recommend integrating our Collector API where possible.
6. Thresholds should be checked/fine tuned regularly
As we mentioned earlier we recommend testing, testing, testing so that you are creating the most valuable monitors possible. So we'd recommend checking in regularly on your Threshold monitors and making sure that you've set a threshold that's going to be the most impactful for monitoring purposes.
